Laser
Treatments
Lasers, which are a form of
pure light, have been used to treat skin problems for over twenty years.
They continue to improve and become more specialized. The table below
list examples of the our various lasers, linked to conditions that can
be treated:
Silk-Touch/Feather
Touch Laser
Erbium:YAG Laser
Pulsed Dye Lasers
Q-Switched Ruby/YAG Laser
Diode Laser(Smooth Beam)
Diode Laser (Diomed) for EVLT CO2 Lasers(cutting)
Long-pulse YAG Laser
Alexandrite Laser
Leg Vein Lasers
ThermacoolTM by Thermage
Diode Laser (Polaris)
Silk-Touch/Feather
Touch Laser
A revolutionary device which allows the surgeon to precisely
control the amount and layer of skin to be removed. The latest method
for removing facial wrinkles and lines, as well as chicken pox and acne
scars. An adjustable, computer-controlled scanning device delivers the
laser energy in pulses, quickly covering the affected area in a "paintbrush"
style. Each pass with the laser removes tissue until the desired result
or depth is reached.
Erbium:YAG
Laser We
are pleased to be able to offer our patients the state-of-the-art Erbium:YAG
laser. Like with the CO2 laser, a thin layer of skin is removed, but now
even more delicate areas can be treated. We can now perform a light "laser
peel" with a quicker recovery period or full-thickness resurfacing
for deeper lines when used in conjunction with the CO2 laser.
Advantages of this system include:
depth can be controlled precisely with little or no scarring
only topical or local anesthetic needed
less pain after the procedure than with dermabrasion or CO2 laser
can treat very close to the eyes for fine lines, and up to and including
the lips.
ThermacoolTM,
by Thermage
This system
is designed to deliver high-energy radio frequency energy to the skin
to cause skin tightening both by shortening existing collagen and by stimulating
new collagen. It is used to lift the brows, and tighten facial skin and
folds in the cheeks, chin, and upper neck. Although there is discomfort
with the treatment, it can be controlled with the use of topical agents
and oral medications. The procedure takes under and hour, is bloodless,
and there is minimal or no downtime. It can be repeated if necessary.
You may find the Thermage web site very informative.
Polaris
Laser
This is a unique laser device combining a high-powered
diode laser operating at 900nm with radio frequency. It is used for facial
wrinkles, folds, and laxity. Usually 3-5 treatments are required, and
there is minimal or no down-time. It is often used in conjunction with
IPL (Aurora system) for photo rejuvenation.
Q-Switched
Ruby and Medlite Lasers
The "Ruby
Laser" is one of the first lasers used in medicine. With recent advances
in technology, this laser is now used to selectively destroy pigment in
the skin without damaging the surrounding tissue or outer layer of the
skin (epidermis). The Medlite laser (Q-swithched YAG) is complimentary
to the
Ruby, and is also used to remove
professional, amateur, and traumatic tattoos, other pigmented lesions
such as age spots and freckles, and some birthmarks. Another use is for
temporary hair removal and the treatment of wrinkles without removing
the skin (non-ablative resurfacing)
Smooth
Beam Diode Laser
This solid-state
laser was first used for the treatments of wrinkles, especially around
the eyes, but was also found to be effective in the treatment of acne
and acne scars. Usually 3-4 treatments are needed, and there is no down-time.
Long-pulse
YAG Laser (Lyra and Gentle-YAG)
The "Long-pulse YAG Laser" produces light that
is invisible to the eye, but very visible to the hair follicle! Its parameters
have been optimized for hair removal, and the treatment of leg veins.
It is especially suitable for darker skin types. The wavelength of this
laser is only minimally absorbed in skin pigment, and its contact cooling
adds to its safety.
Long-Pulse
Alexandrite Laser (GENTLELASE)
The Alexandrite is the most recent addition to our devices
for laser hair removal, and is the most powerful in its class. We are
now able to more cost-effectively and quickly treat large areas such as
the back, chest, and legs. This laser is also safer in darker skin types,
but works best for dark hair in light skin.
CO2
Laser (cutting mode) We
now treat snoring, and nasal and tonsil obstruction with the CO2 laser.
This laser is also used to treat warts (plantar, or anywhere else on the
body), skin tags, and cysts, which have not responded to more traditional
therapy. The CO2 laser is absorbed in any tissue containing water, and
in the "cutting" mode, is able to make relatively bloodless
incisions. In the scanned mode, this laser is used to resurface the skin
(see Silk-touch laser)
Pulsed
Dye Laser (short and long-pulsed)V-Beam
This is a new type of laser designed to selectively destroy
small blood vessels in the under layer (dermis) of the skin without damaging
the surrounding tissue or outer layer of the skin (epidermis). It is used
to treat vascular lesions which usually consist of abnormal blood vessels
including: port wine stains, spider veins of the face, hemangiomas, "broken
blood vessels", and more. In some cases, the Pulsed Dye Laser is
also used to treat certain red or raised scars and warts. This laser can
be used for persons of all ages and normally, does not require an anesthetic.
The new long-pulsed dye laser (V-beam) is able to treat fine veins and
blushing with little or no bruising or discoloration.
Leg
Vein Lasers
The
Laser Centre acquired Canada's first "Leg Vein Laser", the "Sclerolase
Plus" by Candela, and recently added the Vasculite system by ESC
(composed of and Intense Pulsed Light Source, plus a YAG laser), and the
V-Beam long-pulsed Dye laser. Other vascular lasers available at our centre
include the long-pulsed Alexandrite laser(Gentlelase), and the long pulse
YAG laser (Lyra and GentleYAG), and the Polaris. EVLT (see below) is used
for larger varicose veins. We are now able to safely treat leg veins of
varying size from small pink to larger blue. These lasers are used alone
or in combination with sclerotherapy.
EVLT (Endo
Venous Laser Therapy)
This procedure utilizes
a diode laser by Diomed for the non-invasive office based treatment for
varicose veins. In the past, a hospital surgical procedure was needed to
treat reflux of the large vein in the groin responsible for varicose veins.
Now, often in under an hour, the vein can be treated with a laser attached
to a fibre which is inserted into the vein near the knee, and threaded to
the correct location to remove the affected vein. The patient can walk immediately
after the procedure, and there is usually minimal down time. For more information,
please go the the EVLT web site.
